China suspected in massive breach of federal personnel data

WASHINGTON (AP) — China-based hackers are suspected of breaking into the computer networks of the U.S. government personnel office and stealing identifying information of at least 4 million federal workers, American officials…

Such attacks now happen with the inevitability of an unloved season. The information infrastructure in the USA is probably the most complex piece of engineering ever conceived, and as such it is very difficult to secure. It is also not only a technological challenge: it is foremost a personnel challenge, as operators need to follow tightly scripted protocols, rather than shortcuts, not to mention the “insider traitor” that is so difficult to uncover. Foreign powers probe our systems persistently, and they are becoming more sophisticated. The US is responding with training for Cyber-security and Cyber-warfare.
